Unresolved traumas are experiences from the past that have not been adequately processed or healed. These can range from childhood neglect and abuse to more recent traumatic events like accidents or assaults. When the mind fails to reconcile these experiences, they become emotional baggage that we carry into our present and future.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a clinical diagnosis often associated with unresolved trauma. While not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD, the disorder exemplifies the profound impact of unprocessed trauma on mental health.

Anhedonia is a symptom of depressed mood states.
It's when you don't experience positive emotions from interests and pleasures that were previously found enjoyable.
Anhedonia is more than just a lack of motivation or tiredness – it goes deeper, indicating a profound disconnection from positive emotions and rewards. This means that even if you manage to complete a task, it doesn't bring joy, and your mood doesn't improve.
Often people with mood disturbance have low energy and are disinclined to do things, but that's not necessarily Anhedonia, it might be Anergia or Avolition where it is the loss of motivation and a person just doesn't want to.
✔️By understanding the nuances of these related conditions, we can provide more targeted and effective interventions for individuals facing these challenges.
Behavioural activation and activity scheduling are strategies in addressing Avolition and Anergia. However, when it comes to Anhedonia, particularly in cases of melancholic depression, more intensive interventions may be necessary.

Self-validation involves recognising your internal experiences, accepting them as valid, and allowing them to exist without disconnecting or disregarding them.
By cultivating the ability to tolerate and validate our emotions, we break free from the cycle of self-criticism and fear.
Here are three steps to effectively validate yourself:
1. Acknowledge the feeling:
- Example: "I recognise that I feel angry. I need some time alone.""
2. Accept the feeling without resistance:
- Example: "It's alright to feel angry. It's a natural reaction given the circumstances. Taking some time alone can help me process my emotions, which is beneficial."
3. Allow the feeling to be there:
- It's important to accept our feelings while also understanding that they do not define us.
By avoiding distress instead, we approach it with curiosity, acknowledging its presence and permitting it to exist. This shift in perspective fosters understanding, healing, and ultimately, personal development.

In Schema Therapy, schemas are the mental frameworks through which we organise and understand the world, akin to a mind map in our brains. These schemas develop from early childhood experiences, and when certain needs are unmet, they can lead to the formation of maladaptive schemas.
Central to Schema Mode Therapy is the Vulnerable Child Mode (VCM), where painful memories, distressing emotions, and trauma reside. While it's natural to want to detach from this mode, attempting to suppress or ignore it often leads to unhealthy coping mechanisms known as Maladaptive Coping Modes (MCM).
The goal of Schema Mode Therapy is to heal the Vulnerable Child by employing healthy coping strategies from the Healthy Adult Mode, thus reducing the influence of MCM and Dysfunctional Parent Modes (Punitive and Demanding). This process creates space for healing past memories, building emotional tolerance, and fostering feelings of safety and comfort in adulthood.

🧘 What are the four ingredients for emotional wellbeing?
We present this in a hierarchy from simplest to hardest, but if you have never done it before, then it will all be hard.
That’s okay, just keep trying.
🫶 SELF-CARE: Is about looking after the basics. This involves behavioural tasks that are about taking care of your body each day. It includes Sleep, Exercise, Light, Food, Clean, Avoiding your kryptonite, Routine and rest and Engagement. When your body is taken care of, then your emotions get easier to handle.
💫 SELF-VALIDATION: This is a cognitive technique because it is about the way that you talk to yourself about your emotions. Self-validation involves acknowledging and accepting your inner experiences as real for you. It is not asking you to like them, or even to want them. To self-validate you need to Acknowledge the feeling, Accept that the feeling is happening and Allow it to be there without trying to push it away.
🌼 SELF-SOOTHING: Is both behavioural and experiential. It is about looking after yourself while you feel distressed. It is about the actions that you take to care for yourself, with the aim of reducing the intensity of the distress. We often use the five senses for this, so think about what is soothing to look at, to listen to, to smell, to taste and touch. These self-soothing behaviours need to be familiar, comfortable and authentic.
✨️SELF-COMPASSION: Is the willingness to look after yourself with kindness while you experience your feelings. It says “I deserve to look after myself while I am feeling distressed”. It is empowering to know that you can look after yourself while you’re having these feelings, talking to yourself with kindness, not pretending the threat is not happening, but holding yourself with compassion, having the skills to look after yourself.

Write a letter to yourself as though you were writing to someone whom you care about that was in your situation. If they are suffering would you harshly focus on their shortcomings, inadequacies, and failings? Be kind in your tone and write what you'd say if you were being compassionate to your friend. It can shift your perspective in an important and helpful way. It can give you a glimpse of what it is to be self-compassionate.
Be kind and gentle with yourself, the suffering is real.

The maladaptive schema cards give a description of the schema, common beliefs and associated schema modes. On the reverse, the cards show the Healthy Adult Response with reframed thoughts and behaviours for getting your needs met.
The adaptive schema cards give a definition of the schema and examples of healthy beliefs relating to this positive schema. On the reverse, there is a skill to practise to strengthen your adaptive schema.
The needs card lists examples of when needs are met or unmet in childhood and how these relate to the development of adaptive and maladaptive schemas.
These cards can help patients to focus on the schemas that relate to them, without being overwhelmed by the full list of 20. The three decks of cards are connected, so you can lay out the process from maladaptive schema and unmet need, and then flip the cards over to show Healthy Adult with met needs. The skills give a reminder of how to increase positive schemas for the Healthy Adult.

The distress tolerance skills you engage in will depend on what level your Subjective Units of Distress (SUDs) are. Having an awareness of your SUDS as they rise will allow you to engage in early intervention. If you miss that opportunity, then you will need crisis skills. Following that, there is often an experience of an emotional hangover which requires additional skills whilst the residual distress dissipates and you return to baseline.
